"I Write The Songs"

Songwriters that have been around since the dawn of mankind had an appreciation for music. Traditionally, they sang their own songs. The troubadours of the Middle Ages composed and sang their own work. They were known for their ability to compose songs on the spur of the moment about the lord or lady of the estate they were currently visiting. This ability usually earned them food and lodging for a few days.
Troubadours were also known as story tellers. Putting historical events, both factual and mythical to music. This way to preserve history was easier than using hard-to-find parchment. It also enabled larger numbers of people access to information. Without the reading and writing skills we take for granted today, these story tellers were much in demand.
As civilization progressed, singing as an art form became more prevalent. Changing the songwriters roll from storytelling and information source to providing an enjoyable experience. Songwriters begin writing their music for others to perform more often than for their own performances. As singing gained popularity as an art form, songwriters also gained popularity.
Songwriters played a major role in the development of music as we know and appreciate it today. They managed to tune into the hearts and souls of populations for centuries. Bringing both our hopes and fears out into the open to be shared by everyone. Uniting us with their ability to put our dreams into words. Showing us our common ground.
