Searching for and choosing an agent to represent your songwriting interests is not a simple or easy task. When you hire an agent, you are in effect choosing a partner and beginning a relationship that may very well be long-term. Taking the time to research, investigate and make the proper selection is a wise investment of your efforts and time. Here are some clues to look for when selecting an agent.

What Is The Agent's Professional Background This is of course a "no-brainer" question. An essential factor in your relationship with any agent is their level of expertise. That's why you're hiring them. You need to know what qualifies them to act as an agent on your behalf. Their type and level of education, subsequent training and professional experience are all factors in assessing their abilities to represent you properly.

Review The Portfolio What types of clients/who does the agent currently represent? A careful review of the agent's current and past client list is often helpful in your assessment of him. The number as well as caliber of clients can prove a useful indication of the agent's representative abilities.

Investigate Ask questions of the agent and people associated with them. What is their reputation among peers? What is their track record with previous or current clients? Any reputable agent is more than willing to provide adequate references for the purpose of demonstrating their qualifications and assuring potential clients of their reputability.

What Is The Fee Schedule Because the issue of payment can be a prickly point in any contract for hire, you should always investigate and thoroughly understand an agent's fee schedule. Ask as many questions as needed for you to have a complete understanding of the services the agent is offering, is agreeing to perform, and the associate cost of each. This can help to avoid any future misunderstandings relative to fees and payment, and help to ensure a long and happy partnership.

Know Yourself And What You Wish To Achieve While one agent may be more popular than another, have more or less qualifications or one or another group of resources from which to draw, there is no one answer with regard to choosing the "right" agent representative. You must know before deciding to hire an agent what it is you want from the relationship; what your vision is for your songwriting career, how hard you are willing to work, and what you want the end-game to be. Once you've answered those questions, you can make your selection accordingly. When hiring an agent, select well and wisely and you'll each bring to bear your best to achieve your songwriting goals.
