"How You Can Market Your Music Without Professional Help"

While the big name stars in the music industry have professional help to market their careers, the everyday band or musician will usually not be so lucky. However, there are plenty of things that you can do to get your name out there and get your work recognized.
First off, you do not need a record deal to create your own CDs. With today's technology, you can simply and quickly do this at home, and then have them to sell to your fans, friends, family, or casual observer at your shows. CDs are better than cassettes. Generally, you can create them for a few dollars a disk, and sell them at a substantial profit. Many listeners prefer CDs, and they also help improve your image as a music professional. A few hundred CDs will give you an idea of how well they will sell and how much of an investment you will need to make to get your name out there. CDs can also be used to promote yourself to producers, radio stations, and clubs you would like to play at.
Next, never miss an opportunity to grow your mailing list. If you are just starting out, keep a notebook with you at all times to jot down the information of your fans. You can then create a database on your home computer. If your band has its own website, you can also allow fans to sign up for the mailing list there as well. Once you have started a list, use it. A postcard or email is an inexpensive way to let your fans know about upcoming concert dates, CD releases, or any other new information about your band.
If you do not already have a web page, get one. This can allow your fans to see upcoming shows or order your CDs for themselves. You can also use it as a place for fans to come and learn more about your band. Member bios, pictures, updated tour schedules, ticket or prize giveaways, and more will keep people coming back. There are plenty of online services that offer free or inexpensive website help. You may be able to get services like: email, listings, web pages, website design assistance, guest books, and more.
One of the best ways to get your name out is to perform. So get out there and do some shows, even if it means doing them for free. You can use all shows to get names for your mailing lists, sell your CDs, and advertise upcoming events that your band is performing. Plus, it will help you generate a larger fan base as more people become exposed to your music.
Learn how to write press releases and reviews of your shows, and send these in to local newspapers, magazines, or newsletters. You can often write these on your own for little or no cost. To be sure that your release gets published, find out exactly who you need to send in the information to, and make sure that person gets your release a minimum of 30 days in advance.
In most major cities, there are several different radio stations. Take some time to find out which ones play your style of music. Make sure the proper person at the station gets copies of your CDs, and see what else you can do to get air time. This will allow you to reach a much broader fan base and new listeners. Creating music files for download off of your website or internet music site can also spark interest in your band.
